Description

The NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is a bachelor’s degree-level qualification, created for people whose responsibilities include developing and implementing day-to-day health and safety procedures within their workplace. It is a higher level than the Level 5 NVQ Diploma in Health and Safety, which is a foundation-degree level.

Why choose the NVQ route?

NVQs are the UK’s premier vocational qualifications, ideal if you prefer a practical, evidence-based approach to learning that takes place within your working environment – as an alternative to academic study.

Who is the NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Health and Safety suitable for?

Completing the NVQ Level 6 enables health and safety practitioners to apply enhanced knowledge to their work environment. The course is especially suitable if you are in a senior position and wish to gain a degree-level qualification while continuing to hold a demanding role. You are likely to have already gained a level 3 qualification, such as the NEBOSH National General Certificate.

Many candidates pursue NVQ Level 6 with the help of sponsorship by their employer, then report back to the board on the company’s health and safety status.

Course programme

Study is work-based, which means that NVQ Level 6 courses can be undertaken anywhere in the UK.

JMA will allocate a dedicated course manager to you for the duration of the course, who will arrange to conduct your initial assessment and induction. This can take place face-to-face, by telephone or online.

NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is a distance learning and assessment programme, with your work and evidence submitted electronically – either via a cloud-based system or by email. Support and training from your manager are provided principally through telephone calls, Skype calls and emails. Your course manager is a dedicated resource, always ready to mentor you and offer help and advice on a one-to-one basis.

Course duration

Courses are generally completed over a 12 to 18-month period, with a recommended total of 1,064 hours of study. Additional support can be purchased if you require more time to complete your qualification.

Course structure

Initial assessment and induction

Before starting the programme, you will be asked to complete a self-assessment to identify:

  • Specific training needs
  • Support and guidance requirements
  • Units that have already been completed or existing credits that have been accumulated

This assessment helps to establish whether you require any additional training before tackling the units. If necessary, you will need to develop a plan with your manager to gain competence in the relevant areas before attempting the units.

Course modules

There are ten mandatory modules to complete before the NVQ Level 6 Diploma can be awarded:

  1. Promote a positive health and safety culture
  2. Develop and implement the health and safety policy
  3. Develop and implement effective communication systems, for health and safety information
  4. Develop and maintain individual and organisational competence in health and safety matters
  5. Identify, assess and control health and safety risks
  6. Develop and implement proactive monitoring systems for health and safety
  7. Develop and implement reactive monitoring systems for health and safety
  8. Develop and implement health and safety emergency response systems and procedures
  9. Develop and implement health and safety review systems
  10. Maintain knowledge of improvements to influence health and safety practice

Assessment and certification

Each candidate is required to produce a portfolio of evidence, demonstrating that they have achieved all the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for each unit.

As you gather evidence for each of the ten units, you will go through it with your assessor who will ensure that you are meeting all the requirements. Once the assessor is satisfied, your work will be forwarded to the invigilators.

Your dedicated course manager will work with you to ensure that every piece of work you submit meets the standard required; we will not submit any work that we believe might not lead to a pass.

Location
